The days

What happens on the job

  1. Scaffolding goes up, a day or two before.
  2. The old covering, battens and felt come off, one section at a time.
  3. Timbers are checked and repaired.
  4. Membrane and new battens go on, and the roof is weather-tight again.
  5. Slates or tiles, flashings, valleys, the ridge and vents.
  6. Gutters and fascia if they're included, then a clean-up and the scaffolding comes down.

Longer

What makes it take longer

  • Rotten rafters or a sagging ridge found once the roof is open.
  • Natural slate: each slate is holed and fixed by hand.
  • Chimneys, valleys, hips, dormers and roof windows.
  • Rain and high wind: a good roofer only strips what can be made weather-tight the same day.

A photo that works

  • Daylight, from the footpath or the garden.
  • The whole roof in the shot, ridge to gutter.
  • Straight on to the front, not up close.
  • Never go up on the roof to take it.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Can a roof be replaced in winter?

Yes, between spells of bad weather, with the roof made weather-tight each evening. Expect more lost days.

Is the house open to the rain during a re-roof?

It shouldn't be overnight. The membrane goes on as soon as a section is stripped, and the roof is sheeted if rain comes in.

How long is the scaffolding up?

For the job plus a day or so each side (RoofQuote.ie); Recommended Roofing puts it up 1 to 2 days before work begins.
